Producer/Director Deborah DeSnoo
Fluent in Japanese, Deborah DeSnoo has performed in over 40 theatrical and television productions in Japan since 1984. An award-winning veteran theater director, she has directed open, theater, musicals, television and a musical circus extravaganza, Dream Angel. She holds the distinction of being the first foreign director invited to join the Nippon Enshutsusha Kyokai (Japan Directors’ Association)
DeSnoo began her filmmaking career as second unit director and producer in Japan for “Tales of Meeting and Partings” a short film that was as nominated for an Academy Award in 1985. She was then asked to direct a video of a staged version of “The Little Mermaid” for Disney-Kodansha.
Honored with a fellowship from the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, DeSnoo produced, directed, and wrote Corporate Warrior, which has been screened worldwide.
In 1986 DeSnoo established the Japanese corporation, Plug-In, Ltd (formerly ArrowBee Concept, Ltd) of which she is now CEO. Plug-In produces and directrs multimedia entertainment events ranging from symposiums to international circus extravaganzas as well as offering bilingual research and production management and film production co-ordination. Clients include such distinguished organizations as
TDK, Disney- Kodansha, Apple, Netflix, Sanrio’s Purio Land (Hello Kitty Land), Phillip Morris, Marui Department Stores, Dentsu Advertising, The History Channel, Storybook Productions In Germany, Tata in India, Hakohodo Advertising Agency, Dentsu Tec, the Asashi Shinbun, Television Asahi, t he City of Tokyo, the Japanese Government, the Samurai Art Museum in Berlin, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC , Geidankyou, and NHK.
DeSnoo began her career as an actor/director in NYC. Her first trip to Japan was during her Senior year at NYU in order to spend 3 months studying Classical Japanese Dance. She returned in 1984 to study Noh with the world- famous Noh actor, Kanze Hideo. In 1985, TBS produced 我が愛東京 / I Love Tokyo, a one-hour documentary featuring DeSnoo and Kanze Hideo.
She began working in film as second unit director and producer-in-Japan with Producer/ Director Lesli Linka Glatter for “TALES OF MEETING AND PARTINGS” , a short film that was nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD IN 1985.
Honored with a fellowship from the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, in 1994 DeSnoo produced, directed, and wrote CORPORATE WARRIOR, a short film on interracial marriage and Karoshi which has been screened worldwide and featured in a special report on NHK World News.
